The House behind Planteray (Plantation) Rum

The story of Planteray Rum begins in 1989 when the cognac house Maison Ferrand was acquired by Alexandre Gabriel. In addition to cognac, Gabriel is also interested in rum. Throughout the 1990s, he traveled around the Caribbean to find some of the region's best rum casks. At the same time, he sold Ferrand's used cognac barrels to rum distilleries in the Caribbean, establishing a special relationship with the distilleries, through which he gained access to some of the best rum casks. This became the foundation for Plantation Rum – carefully selected rums from the best terroirs of the tropics. Maison Ferrand is behind Planteray Rum, Cognac Ferrand, and Citadelle Gin.

Planteray (Plantation) Rum's Style

Planteray Rum is therefore not rum from one specific country, but from a range of different countries, and includes both dark rum and light rum. The rum is typically made from sugar cane molasses, and there are both natural rumin the English style – i.e., without added sugar – and rum or spirit drinks with sweetness (added sugar). The range includes Signature Blends such as Planteray Gran Anejo, Bar Classics such as Planteray 3 Starsand Planteray Original Dark, which is ideal as a cocktail rum, and Special Editions of single cask and vintage rums such as Planteray Trinidad 2003. Each rum is carefully selected and blended to best represent the rum style and taste characteristic of the terroir/region from which the rum originates. In addition to the many different rum bottlings, there is also a Planteray Pineapple "spirit drink" from Plantation.

Planteray (Plantation) Rum's Own Distilleries

Planteray Rum does not only acquire rum from others. In 2017, Plantation bought into two of the industry's most well-established distilleries: the legendary West Indies Rum Distillery, which is the largest and second oldest distillery in Barbados, and National Rums of Jamaica in Kingston. The latter includes two distilleries: Clarendon Distillery, with over 250 years of history, and Long Pond Distillery, which has been operating for the last 200 years. National Rums of Jamaica produces highly acclaimed rum primarily for the Canadian and European markets. Planteray has thus secured access to good rum from the important rum countries of Barbados– the cradle of rum – and Jamaica.
