Gosling's

Gosling's Rum from Bermuda is known, among other things, from the Dark 'n Stormy cocktail, which uses Gosling's Black Seal 80 Proof Rum. Gosling's Family Reserve Old Rum is a top-class rum and one of our own favorites (although it is hard to come by and often sold out).

Gosling’s Rum

Gosling's is a dark rum that can be enjoyed neat but is especially known as the official cocktail rum in a Dark'n Stormy. Gosling's is rum from Bermuda, but the story of Gosling’s Rum begins in England in 1806, when the young wine merchant's son James Gosling sets sail from the English coast on the good ship Mercury. The ship is loaded with goods bound for America, but after 3 hard months at sea, they give up on reaching their destination and land in the nearest port – St. George in Bermuda. James Gosling stays in Bermuda and opens the wine and spirits shop Gosling Brothers Ltd. in the capital Hamilton with his brother in 1822.

Gosling’s Black Seal is created

The Gosling brothers begin importing rum distillates to Bermuda around 1860. They experiment with blending rum and eventually find a formula for a dark Old Rum, which they sell 'on demand' in the shop. Up until 1914, they bottle the rum directly into former champagne bottles and seal the corks with black wax. This is why the rum was popularly called 'black seal', and a pun and a funny drawing later, the brand Gosling’s Black Sealwas created.

The taste of Gosling's Rum

To this day, Gosling’s remains a family-owned enterprise that has won acclaim and awards worldwide. Gosling's is actually Bermuda's largest export, and has won several international awards for its taste - and rightfully so, if you ask us. Gosling’s Black Seal has a rich, spicy, and complex taste with notes of toffee, vanilla, and caramel, and has, among other things, won platinum at the World Spirit Championships in 1999, where it received 96 out of 100 points. Gosling’s Family Reserve Old Rumis the same blend as Black Seal, which has aged even longer and, with age, has gained an even more nuanced and complex taste. Gosling's Family Reserve Old Rum most recently won the Gold Medal for Taste at the Bartender Brand Awards in 2021.

Gosling’s - the rum for the original Dark’n Stormy

Did you know that Gosling’s is also behind Bermuda’s popular national cocktail Dark’n Stormy? And that Gosling’s actually holds the patent for the drink? This means that bartenders worldwide cannot simply mix any rum with ginger beer, add a slice of lime, and call it a Dark’n Stormy. No. If it is to be done correctly, the rum must be Gosling’s Black Seal. With a Gosling's ginger beer.
