The House Behind Plantation Rum

The story of Plantation Rum begins in 1989 when the cognac house Maison Ferrand was acquired by Alexandre Gabriel. In addition to cognac, Gabriel was also interested in rum. Throughout the 1990s, he traveled across the Caribbean to find some of the best rum casks in the region. At the same time, he sold Ferrand's used cognac barrels to rum distilleries in the Caribbean, building a special relationship with the distilleries, which gave him access to some of the finest rum casks. This became the foundation for Plantation Rum – carefully selected rums from the best terroirs of the tropics. Maison Ferrand is behind Plantation Rum, Cognac Ferrand, and Citadelle Gin.

Plantation Rum's style

Plantation Rum is thus not rum from one specific country, but from a variety of different countries, encompassing both dark rum and light rum. The rum is made from sugarcane molasses and is primarily natural rumin the English style, meaning without added sugar. The assortment includes Signature Blends such as Grande Reserve Barbados, Bar Classics such as Plantation 3 Stars, which is ideal as a cocktail rum, and Special Editions of single cask and vintage rums such as Panama Vintage 2008, Plantation XO 20th Anniversary Rum, and Plantation Rum Pineapple. Each rum is carefully selected and blended to best represent the rum style and taste characteristic of the terroir/area from which the rum originates. In addition to the many different rum bottlings, there is also a Plantation Pineapple "spirit drink" from Plantation.

Plantation Rum's Own Distilleries

Plantation Rum doesn't just buy rum from others. In 2017, Plantation acquired stakes in two of the industry's most well-established distilleries: the legendary West Indies Rum Distillery, the largest and second-oldest distillery in Barbados, and National Rums of Jamaica in Kingston. The latter includes the two distilleries Clarendon Distillery, which has over 250 years of history, and Long Pond Distillery, which has been around for the past 200 years. National Rums of Jamaica produces highly acclaimed rum primarily for the Canadian and European markets. Plantation has thereby secured access to quality rum from the important rum-producing countries of Barbados – the cradle of rum – and Jamaica.
