Sweet rum and cane spirit

Sweet "rum" has absolutely been the segment where both the largest sales and the largest supply of rum have historically taken place. As of May 25, 2021, new EU legislation came into effect, stating that a rum may not contain more than 20 grams of sweetening product per liter. It is therefore possible that the "sweet rum" category will be significantly reduced, as many producers may choose to add less sugar to retain the name rum/rum/ron on the bottle. Some of the products we have included in this category are therefore formally no longer rum. The sweet "rum," which we at Rombo now call "sweet rum and sugarcane-based spirit," most often comes from former Spanish colonies such as Guatemala, Venezuela, Peru, the Dominican Republic, etc., and sweet rum and sugarcane-based spirits are in most cases column distilled (as opposed to distillation in traditional pot stills). It should also be remembered that a distilled spirit, by definition, cannot be sweet, even if it is made from sugarcane (which rum must be), and sweetness therefore arises from the addition of sugar or some other form of additive during/after aging. Sweet rum and sugarcane-based spirits should be enjoyed neat, and they are suitable for many types of dessert.
