Richard Seale's Rum

Foursquare Rum Distillery was founded in St. Philip, Barbados, in 1920 and is a 4th-generation family business run by Master Distiller Richard Seale. Seale is a highly regarded figure in the rum world and was named Rum Producer of the Year in 2016 at the prestigious ISWC competition. Foursquare's products have also won a wealth of medals for their high quality, and Seale is a strong advocate fornatural rum, where there is no embellishment of color, sugar content, or age. Thus, it is always the youngest rum in a Foursquare blend that is stated as the age on the label.

Distillation and maturation of Foursquare rum

Foursquare's rum is based on molasses, and although the distillery is surrounded by sugarcane, much of the molasses used in rum production is imported from Guyana. For fermentation, Foursquare uses standard dry yeast imported from South Africa, and after fermentation, the rum is distilled on either pot stills or column stills. After distillation, the rum is first stored in stainless steel tanks, and uniquely, the distillates are blended before being put into barrels. Foursquare primarily ages their rum in ex-Jack Daniel's bourbon barrels, but also, for example, in port wine and Madeira barrels. A good example of this is the 14-year-old, tropically aged Foursquare Redoutable in the distillery's Exceptional Casks series, which has matured in former bourbon and Madeira barrels respectively.

In addition to the aforementioned series, Foursquare also produces rum for The Real McCoy and Rum 66.
