The name Pusser's British Navy Gunpowder Proof Black Label Rum refers to the fact that 54.5% was enough to ignite the rum with gunpowder, thus making it strong enough = Gunpowder Proof (it also says "original admiralty strength" on the bottle).

Pusser's British Navy Gunpowder Proof Rum has notes of molasses, toffee, honey, vanilla, oak, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger, and the taste/aftertaste is full-bodied and long.

As perhaps the only rum, Pusser's is still distilled in old wooden stills, which is as classic as it gets, and it also gives the rum incredible richness.
