Abuelo XII Two Oaks Rum
Abuelo XII Anos Two Oaks is a wonderfully smooth rum from Varela Hermanos in Panama. This is a 12-year-old rum that has been aged in two characteristic oak barrels. First in carefully selected ex-bourbon casks, and then in brand new and extra charred American oak casks. The barrels are carefully selected and treated in Napa Valley, California. They are toasted at 180°C for a long 60 minutes to gently open the wood, and then the heat is raised to 220°C to achieve the deep charring of the desired 8 mm. This two-stage process allows Abuelo XII Anos Two Oaks to extract an incredible amount of flavor from the wood, creating a natural charcoal filter that provides an unusually smooth Two Oaks finish.
Nose: rich aroma of oak, light smoke and fine notes of vanilla, coffee and roasted almonds. Taste: prominent oak notes with a special smoky sweetness. Caramel, spices, and roasted coffee beans with fine notes of cola and nuts.

Ron Abuelo is a consistently medium-sweet rum series, which, however, even from its 7-year-old edition, also boasts good complexity that balances the sweetness in a pleasant way. In other words, Ron Abuelo offers good rum for your money! The distillery's showpiece is Ron Abuelo Centuria Reserva de la Familia, which was named Best New Rum at the Golden Rum Barrel Awards in October 2011 in London.
