Don Papa

The Don Papa brand offers a range of both rum and sugarcane spirits from the Philippines, which is globally one of the largest countries in this category. Don Papa, however, is one of the very few brands that has made its way to Europe, where it has become a great success. Don Papa Small Batch was launched in Denmark in the summer of 2014, and since then, a large number of different bottlings have followed, often in limited quantities, and therefore quickly selling out. Don Papa products could potentially appeal to the many Old St. Croix fans in terms of taste.

What type is Don Papa?

Don Papa rum and sugarcane spirit comes from one of the world's best locations for growing sugarcane, namely the 'Sugarlandia' area, located on the island of Negros Occidental in the Philippines. Don Papa is in the direction of the Spanish style, which is made from molasses and is on the sweeter side. The molasses is made from local sugarcane from Negros Occidental. After fermentation, the rum is column-distilled and aged in American oak barrels for a minimum of 7 years. The oldest Don Papa rum is 10 years old. Don Papa is a rum on the sweeter side, with sugar added during blending. Don Papa Baroko is extra popular among those who love sweet rum, and if you want to discover your own favorite, the Don Papa Sugarlandia Tasting Kit is an excellent option.

Who makes Don Papa rum?

Filipino Don Papa rum was created by British-born Stephen Carroll and is part of his Bleeding Heart Company. Stephen Carroll previously worked for Remy Cointreau and launched Don Papa in 2012. Don Papa is the rum that has achieved the greatest success outside the Philippines.

Don Papa's design

Don Papa is named after Papa Isio, the charismatic Filipino rebel leader from Negros who, in the 1890s, helped drive the Spanish colonial power from the island and win its independence. His portrait is part of Don Papa's very beautiful, award-winning design, and if you think you've seen him before, it might be because he has a doppelgänger in Don Juancho Melendez, who is on the outside of Diplomatico's bottles. Don Papa's design is also an international collaboration. The bottle is from France, the cork from Portugal, and the label from Italy, while the brand design was conceived in New York. In addition to Don Papa - the man with a gecko monocle - there are a total of 50 different jungle animals on the Don Papa bottle. Don Papa's design has won, among other things, the double Gold Medal Award at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2013 and a GD USA Magazine American Package Design Award.
