Danish Rum and Cane Spirit

Danish rum and sugarcane spirits may sound a bit odd to many, as we don't grow sugarcane in Denmark, and we haven't been accustomed to the existence of Danish-produced rum and sugarcane spirits. However, as the category becomes increasingly popular, Danish rum and sugarcane spirits are also appearing on the market. Skotlander Rum is a good example of a Danish rum producer, and they actually ferment and distill the imported molasses themselves. Other brands like Fanø Skibsrom and Great Dane (also produced by Skotlander) import finished rum, and then age, blend, and bottle their rum or sugarcane spirits themselves.

What is Danish rum?

By definition, rum is made from sugarcane, which does not grow in the Danish climate. Therefore, when speaking of Danish rum or sugarcane spirit, it does not refer to products where the sugarcane is grown in Denmark, but rather rum or sugarcane spirit made by a Danish producer. This can be rum and sugarcane spirit distilled in Denmark from imported molasses, or it can be imported distillates that are aged and blended in Denmark. At Rombo, we carry Danish brands such as Great Daneand Skotlander, who produce both light cocktail rumand dark rum and sugarcane spiritwith varying degrees of sweetness.
