Bodega Norton 2022 Altura Malbec

2022 Altura Malbec Norton is made by winemaker David Bonomi, who has been named one of the Top 10 winemakers in South America by Decanter and Winemaker of the Year 2020 by Tim Atkin. 

David Bonomi uses grapes from the Los Chacayes vineyard in Valle de Uco, Mendoza. The vineyards are located at an altitude of 1300 meters, and yields are despairingly small. This vineyard was planted in 2001 and already provides some of the benchmarks for Malbec in Argentina. Harvesting takes place late in April, manually, and the grapes are hand-sorted on a conveyor belt. Malolactic fermentation occurs in small oak barrels and later in small cement tanks at 20 degrees Celsius. All the wine spends a minimum of 12 months in small oak barrels, mostly French and all used once. The wine is not released for sale until after 6 months in the bottle.

Mendoza is located in western Argentina, at the foot of the impressive Andes Mountains, with Aconcagua as its highest peak at just under 7,000 meters. This is the highest outside of the Himalayas. In addition to being a very welcoming small big city, Mendoza is the center for most of Argentina's high-end wine production. Although wine has been produced in Mendoza for more than 150 years, it is only in the last few decades that Mendoza has distinguished itself with a very wide range of internationally recognized top wines.
