Stauning Whisky Dirty Bastard
Stauning Whisky Dirty Bastard is another expression of Stauning's quest to break the norms in the world of whisky. This edition of the 'Bastard' whisky breaks with convention and once again explores uncharted territory.
Dirty Bastard undergoes maturation in no less than three different types of barrels. First, it is aged at the distillery for 3-4 years in new American oak barrels, then in Mexican mezcal barrels for 6-12 months, a transformative process that leaves us with the familiar Stauning Bastard whisky. But it doesn't stop there. Bastard then ventures into the world of beer barrels. It finishes in 'Mexican Hot Chocolate Imperial Stout' barrels from the Danish brewery, To Øl.
This unique aging process gives the whisky an unclear and 'dirty' appearance, which inspired its name. But don't worry. It all settles down, leaving a beautiful, clear, and irresistible whisky.
Dirty Bastard is a further development of Stauning's Bastard, which is number 2 in Stauning's Research Series. Dirty Bastard can be considered the 4th in the series, although it is not expected to remain a permanent part of the range. Rye and barley from two local farms. All grain is floor-malted and kiln-dried at the distillery. The composition varies slightly from batch to batch, but generally, the trend is 60% malted rye and 40% malted barley. Double distilled in small pot stills heated by direct fire.
It is common to age beer in whisky barrels, but it is rare for whisky to be aged in beer barrels. Our doubts, however, were quickly dispelled when we tasted the result of aging our whisky in the aromatic barrels from To Øl. The potent and flavorful stout cast stardust over the Bastard, elevating it to new heights. A whisky that will undoubtedly seduce even the most discerning whisky enthusiast. Good to know:
The illustration on the bottle depicts the hairless Mexican dog Xoloitzcuintle (Xolo) as well as a selection of flavor notes and components from beer brewing and production.
Stauning Whisky Dirty Bastard presents itself with a dark amber color, slightly turbid in appearance. When you first take a breath, you will be met by a fascinating aroma of grain, cinnamon, cocoa, and an undertone of tobacco. When you take the first sip, your taste buds will be indulged with nuances of dark chocolate and vanilla, complemented by notes of toasted nuts. There is an exciting warmth from chili, balanced by notes of dark beer, hops, and roasted malt, making the taste experience both deep and complex. 53.4% ABV - 70 cl.
