Diplomatico – an international bestseller

Diplomatico isrum from Venezuela, produced at Destilleias Unidas SA (DUSA), which was established as Licorerias Unidas SA in 1959 (LUSA). In 2002, the distillery changed ownership and name to Destilleias Unidas SA (DUSA), and the previously local rum brand Diplomatico was introduced to the world market. From then on, things progressed rapidly, and Diplomatico became an international bestseller, now sold in more than 95 countries.

What type of rum is Diplomatico - and which is the best?

Diplomatico produces rum in the Spanish style, and offers both sweet rum,medium-sweet rumandnatural rum.Diplomatico is primarily dark rum, but is also available in a single light variant, namelyDiplomatico Planas. The rum is made from the distillery's very own sugarcane variety, cana diplomatica, which grows in the fields around the distillery. After harvesting and pressing, the juice from the sugarcane is boiled down to sugarcane honey and molasses, which are then distilled. Rum made from molasses results in a lighter rum, like the bestseller, while rum made from sugarcane honey produces more complex rums, such as the very popularDiplomatico Mantuanoand Diplomatico Distillery Collection no 1.

How Diplomatico rum is distilled and aged

At Diplomatico, different distillation apparatuses are used depending on the type of rum to be created. As a general rule, column distillation is used for lighter rum types, batch kettle to create more complex flavors, and pot stills for the most complex.

Different types of barrels are used when aging Diplomatico rum, especially barrels previously used forbourbonandmalt whisky, but also Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez sherry barrels. The wood imparts different flavors and color nuances to the rum, and sherry barrels in particular impart notes of dried fruit. When the rum is fully aged, selected barrels are blended by the Master Blender.

Diplomatico does not age rum using the solera method, unlike many other rum producers. At Diplomatico, the rum is only blended when it is fully aged, and all rum in the bottle is always at least the number of years indicated on the bottle.

Who is on the Diplomatico bottle?

The gentleman on the Diplomatico bottle is Don Juancho Melendez, a rum-loving aristocrat who lived in the Planas Valley in the 1800s, where Diplomatico's distillery is located today. Don Juancho Melendez was very interested in rum and had built up a substantial collection of rum after numerous trips to the Caribbean. His collection became known as 'The Ambassador's Reserves,' and his lifestyle and enthusiasm have inspired Diplomatico.

Another 'Don' who has also had his portrait on rum bottles isDon Papa, also known as Papa Isio, the charismatic rebel leader from Negros in the Philippines, who helped to drive out the Spanish colonial power in the 1890s.
