As regulations dictate, the bourbon contains a minimum of 51% corn. Additionally, Maker's Mark bourbon whisky contains red winter wheat, which provides a rounder and smoother taste. After distillation, the bourbon is aged in new American oak barrels for between 5½ and 6½ years, depending on temperature and humidity. Afterwards, 19 barrels are selected at a time for each production – the lowest number in American whiskey production. Once Maker's Mark Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whisky has been bottled, the bottle is hand-dipped in its characteristic red wax. Everything about Maker's Mark is handmade, and no two bottles are alike. The sweetness in this bourbon is clearly noticeable – much more so than in other bourbons. Maker's Mark Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whisky has a dark and golden copper color, while the aroma is sweet and intensely spicy with distinct notes of vanilla, caramel, and toasted nuts.
