Isabella’s Islay

Price: DKK 41 million ($6.2 million)

The most expensive bottle of whisky ever sold comes from the island of Islay, west of Glasgow in Scotland. In 2018, a bottle of Isabella's Islay was sold at a private auction held by Bonhams in Hong Kong, where the final bid from an anonymous collector reached $6.2 million.

The whisky itself is an aged single malt, but the reason for the enormous price lies mainly in the bottle. The whisky is presented in an English crystal decanter adorned with more than 8,500 diamonds and 300 rubies that spell out the name.

The Macallan Fine & Rare 1926 60-Year-Old

Price: DKK 14.3 million ($2.15 million)
Macallan is a famous single malt whisky distillery in Craigellachie, Scotland, located where the rivers Spey and Fiddich (whose valley or glen gives its name to the famous Scotch whisky brand Glenfiddich) meet.

Macallan's Fine and Rare 1926 Whisky is a single malt whisky distilled in 1926 and bottled in 1986. In 2014, a bottle of Macallan Fine & Rare 1926 60-Year-Old sold at auction for $2.15 million, which at the time was a world record.

The Emerald Isle Collection

Price: DKK 13.3 million ($2 million)

The Emerald Isle Collection is a limited edition whiskey set released in 2021, created by The Craft Irish Whiskey Company in collaboration with Fabergé. The set includes two bottles of single malt Irish whiskey, an exclusive Celtic egg made by Fabergé, a custom Fabergé Altruist watch, two ultra-rare Cohiba Siglo VI Gran Reserva cigars, and is presented in a beautifully handcrafted walnut wooden box.

The expensive whiskey is produced from triple-distilled Irish barley and aged for at least 25 years in American oak barrels before being further matured in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks for five years. The result is a smooth, complex whiskey with notes of vanilla, oak, and dried fruit.

Karuizawa 1960 50-Year-Old

Price: DKK 13.3 million ($2 million)

Now for the first of three Japanese entries on the list. Distilled in 1960 and bottled in 2010, this 50-year-old Japanese single malt whisky joined the ranks of the world's most expensive whiskies in 2016 when a bottle of Karuizawa 1960 50-Year-Old sold at auction for $2 million, setting a new world record for the most expensive bottle of Japanese whisky ever sold.

The whisky is made from 100% malted barley and aged for 50 years in Japanese oak casks, giving it a deep amber color and a complex flavor profile with notes of honey, chocolate, and spice. The Karuizawa distillery, founded in 1955, closed in 2000, making Karuizawa whiskies even rarer and more valuable.

Yamazaki 55 Year Old

Price: DKK 11.9 million ($1.8 million)

Only 100 bottles of Yamazaki 55-Year Old were produced, contributing to its staggering price. The whisky was distilled in 1960 before being aged for 55 years in a combination of Japanese and American oak casks, giving it a unique flavor profile.

This smooth and flavorful Yamazaki single malt whisky was bottled at 43% ABV, and with a limited number of bottles in existence, it will likely sell for an even higher price the next time it goes under the hammer at auction.

Hanyu Ichiro´s Full Card Series

Price: DKK 10.2 million ($1.53 million)

If you've been a bit disillusioned by the prices so far, the next item on the list of expensive whiskies is a real bargain! The DKK 10.2 million you free from your piggy bank will actually buy you 54 bottles of fine Japanese whisky – a little under DKK 190,000 per bottle. The complete Hanyu Ichiro's Full Card Series consists of 54 individual bottles, each representing a playing card in a deck, and two jokers are also included.

The set of whisky was released between 2005 and 2014 and sold for $1.53 million at Bonhams Fine & Rare Wine and Whisky auction in Hong Kong in 2020, with the high price aided by the fact that the Hanyu distillery is no longer in operation.

The Macallan Lalique Legacy Collection 

Price: DKK 6.6 million ($993,000)

The Macallan Lalique Legacy Collection is a limited edition single malt whisky released in 2020. It represents an exclusive collaboration between The Macallan and the French crystal and jewelry brand Lalique.

The Macallan Lalique Legacy Collection comes as a collection of six enchanting crystal decanters (called the Six Pillars Collection) filled with some of Macallan's rarest single malts. The collection includes Macallan's single malts aged between 50 and 65 years, and the bottles are stored in a custom-made cabinet of natural ebony that also houses six bottles and six Lalique Macallan glasses. When it went under the hammer in April 2017 at Sotheby's auction in Hong Kong, it sold for $993,000.

Springbank 1919

Price: DKK 2.3 million ($78,000)

One of the rarest single malts ever released is this famous Springbank, once featured in the Guinness World Records as the world's most expensive whisky. Only 24 bottles of this liquid treasure from the 1919 vintage were bottled at the distillery in 1970. 

In August 2021, a 5cl bottle from the same cask of 1919 Springbank sold at auction for DKK 55,000, making it the world's most expensive miniature bottle.

In 2013, a full-sized bottle from the batch of 24 bottles sold for DKK 430,000; six years later, another bottle sold for DKK 2.3 million.

Dalmore 62

Price: DKK 1.28 million ($192,000)

Sold at Changi Airport, the Dalmore 62 made history with a price of 250,000 Singapore dollars or DKK 1.28 million.

It is part of a limited series, as the distillery released only twelve bottles with different names. 

Dalmore 62 has been created by blending four single malt whiskies from the Scottish Highlands from the years 1939, 1926, 1876, and 1868. It is said to be a century-old whisky and is very rare and unique.

Reportedly, the nose includes various aromas such as Colombian coffee, bitter orange, crushed walnuts, and sweet raisins with subtle notes of sandalwood, white musk, patchouli, and grapefruit. And after the first taste, you will perceive a hint of mango, fig, and caramelized apples, and a finish of roasted coffee, syrupy toffee, marzipan, and soft licorice. This is a complex alcoholic beverage.

Glenfiddich Janet Sheed Roberts Reserve 1955

Price: DKK 625,000 ($94,000)

The last bottle on the list is an absolute steal compared to the others. In 2012, a bottle of Glenfiddich Janet Sheed Roberts Reserve 1955 sold for DKK 625,000 at an auction in New York, USA.

It is part of a limited edition series, as the distillery bottled fifteen bottles but only released eleven of them to the market. The name Janet Sheed was added to the label as she was the granddaughter of William Grant, the founder of Glenfiddich.

Glenfiddich Janet Sheed Roberts Reserve 1955 is a rare drink with a heavenly taste of woody oak and hints of heather, hay, pear, and barley. The light and smooth Scotch whisky has a subtly spicy finish with a touch of dried meat and nutmeg.
